Officially Azerbaijan is called the Republic of Azerbaijan (Azərbaycan Respublikası ). This is a country, which is situated on the eastern part of the Caucasus and in the south-western coast of the Caspian Sea. The country is located where West Asia and Eastern Europe cross paths. Azerbaijan is the largest country in the Caucasus.
Azerbaijan borders with Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Iran. Part of the territory of Azerbaijan is controled by unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, and Armenia (Barkhudarli exclaves Kyarki, Upper Askipara). Azerbaijan, however, controls the part of territory of Armenia (exclave Artsvashen).
The state capital - is the city of Baku. In 1918, for several months, the capital was Elizabethpol (Ganja). On the territory of Azerbaijan are situated several capitals of historical state formations: Sheki, Ganja, Kabbalah, Shusha, Shamakhi, Bard and Nakhichevan.
The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was proclaimed in 1918 – and it was the first democratic republic in the Muslim world.
Geographically Azerbaijan consists of 66 regions, 11 cities of republican subordination and one autonomous republic - Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic.
The head of state is the president. Azerbaijan is presidential republic. The president is elected by popular vote for a five year term, and he, in turn, appoints all government officials.
