Lithuania is officially called Lithuanian Republic. Lithuania is located on the shore of the Baltic Sea in Europe. The state shares borders with the following countries: Latvia (North), Belorussia (South East), Poland and Kaliningrad (South-West). The country is a member of UN, EU and NATO.
The entire territory of Lithuania is divided into 10 counties: Vilnius, Alytus, Klaipeda, Kaunas,, Marijampolė, Tauragė County, Panevėžys, Utena, Telšiai County, Šiauliai. Counties form the municipality of 9 cities and 43 districts, as well as 8 of the newly formed governments. Municipalities consist of elderships.
In Lithuania, there are three types of communities: cities, townships and villages. Status of the territory can be obtained by resolution of the Seimas. In 2004 there were 106 official cities.
By form of government Lithuania is a parliamentary republic, but it has some features of the presidential republic. The total length of the presidential rule is 5 years. The Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania consists of a unicameral Seima (total 141 places). Of these 71 deputies are elected by the majority system in single-member constituencies and the other 70 - using a list-proportional system with a barrier of 5%. Deputies are elected for a period - 4 years.
