Croatia is a state, which is located in South of the central Europe, and on the western part of the Balkan Peninsula. The country is a former republic of the Yugoslavia, which became independent in 1991. By form of government Croatia is a democratic republic.
The capital and largest city is Zagreb. The country shares borders with the following countries: Slovenia (North-West), Hungary and Serbia (North-East), Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro (South), the western part of the country is washed by the Adriatic Sea. The national currency is Kuna. Croatia is a member of the UN, OSCE, Council of Europe and NATO since 2009. On July 1, 2013 it is expected (after a referendum in 2012), that Croatia will join the European UNI0N. The country will become the 28th member of the EU.
The entire territory of Croatia is divided into 20 regions, 122 cities and 424 communities. The official language in Croatia is Croatian. In some cities of Istria the official language is Italian. Other spoken languages of national minorities are Slovenian, Serbian, Czech, Hungarian, Albanian, etc.
